As part of the Fire Department's goal of keeping West Valley City and its citizens safe, our Fire Department conducts Fire and Life Safety Inspections for our local businesses. The business's occupancy type and fire load will determine how often and what type of inspection will be conducted.

These inspections can save your business from a loss of income by finding hazards that could otherwise cause costly damage, injury, or fire. Our goal is to find these hazards before they cause a problem and help your business meet the International Fire Code.

We currently perform Hazardous Materials Inspections, Crew Business Inspections, Daycare Inspections (both home and commercial), Healthcare Facility Inspections, Food Truck Inspections, and we now offer a Self-Inspection for any business that meets the requirements.

What To Expect

Most inspections take less than 30 minutes depending on the business size and any corrections that need to be made. We ask you to be present for the inspection and walk through with our personnel if possible. Here are a few of the key items we will check: Automatic fire sprinklers, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting and exit signs, storage and housekeeping, paths of egress, and electrical hazards.

Self-inspections may be suitable for low-risk/low-occupancy locations and can be performed by the business owner or occupant by following a fire safety inspection checklist. If you have received notice that your business qualifies for self-inspection, please log into West Valley City's online service portal to complete it before renewing your business license.

If you have any questions or want to schedule a fire inspection, please contact the Fire Prevention Office, Monday through Thursday, at 801-965-7171.
